Blue Moon Curaçao Vodka Cocktail with Coconut and Cardamom
The enchanting Blue Moon Cocktail features Blue Curaçao Vodka, rich coconut milk, cardamom-infused simple syrup, and a delightful candied orange twist, making it perfect for moonlit soirées.
Blue Moon Cocktail
Some evenings genuinely seem to call for a special tradition.
Not an extravagant one, but rather a simple yet significant gesture. A serene moment under a starlit sky. A chance to appreciate the silvery radiance of the moon glowing a bit more intensely than usual. To me, a Blue Moon embodies that feeling — rare, enigmatic, and worthy of a toast.
As I began crafting a cocktail inspired by the Blue Moon, I found myself contemplating its origins. Unlike many spirits that start with sun-kissed grains, vodka is often derived from potatoes, nestled in the soil, quietly thriving in rich earth. This connection struck me as beautifully meaningful. The moon above, the earth below — one luminous and far-off, the other earthy and grounding.
The Blue Moon Cocktail captures these concepts in a single glass. The stunning blue Curaçao mirrors moonlit nights, while creamy coconut smooths out the flavors, and the cardamom introduces an unexpected warmth that feels almost magical. Topped with a sparkling candied orange ribbon, it strikes a balance between elegance and playfulness, ideal for those rare moments that call for something extraordinary.
Why You’ll Love This Blue Moon Cocktail
A Blue Moon is a rare sight, and this cocktail is certainly worthy of the occasion.
Its vibrant blue hue instantly makes an impression, perfect for celebrations, themed parties, celestial events, or simply a memorable evening on the patio. The blend of vodka and Blue Curaçao offers a smooth, citrus-forward base, while coconut milk adds a luxurious, silky texture that elevates the drink.
Unlike many overly sweet blue cocktails, the infusion of cardamom syrup brings in a subtle spice and depth, balancing citrusy notes and offering a more refined flavor experience.
Ingredients for a Blue Moon Cocktail
Blue Curaçao – This vivid blue citrus liqueur gives the cocktail its distinct moonlit color while imparting sweet orange notes that complement vodka and coconut perfectly.
Vodka – The foundation of this cocktail, vodka offers a clean, neutral spirit that allows the citrus, coconut, and spice flavors to shine. Its traditional ties to potatoes inspired the earth-and-moon symbolism behind this concoction.
Coconut Milk – Rich coconut milk contributes body, creaminess, and a luxurious mouthfeel. It smooths the citrus flavors and lends a dreamy, cloud-like look to the drink.
Sugar – Used to prepare both the cardamom syrup and the candied orange garnish, sugar balances the tartness of the Curaçao and enhances the overall smoothness of the cocktail.
Cardamom Seeds – Cardamom brings warm floral spices along with subtle citrus notes, elevating the cocktail beyond sweetness to something intriguing and unforgettable.
Orange Rind – Fresh orange peel enhances the citrus sensations from the Curaçao and adds an eye-catching decorative touch.
Ice – Ice quickly chills the drink and contributes to the smooth, frothy texture achieved by shaking.

How to Make a Blue Moon Cocktail
Step 1: Make the Cardamom Coconut Simple Syrup
In a small skillet over medium-low heat, place the cardamom seeds.
Gently crush the seeds as they warm, then sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sugar over them while stirring constantly.
When the sugar starts to melt, pour in 2 tablespoons of coconut milk and remove the skillet from the heat right away.
Stir until you achieve a smooth mixture.
Strain this mixture through a fine mesh sieve and refrigerate before using.
Featured Snippet Tip: Toasting cardamom preps the simple syrup by releasing its aromatic oils, resulting in a richer, more flavorful syrup for your cocktail.
Step 2: Create the Candied Orange Garnish
Using a vegetable peeler, slice long strips of orange peel roughly 4 inches long and ¼ inch wide.
Heat a skillet over medium flame and add the leftover sugar.
Once the sugar has melted, introduce the orange strips and gently shake the pan until the sugar lightly adheres to the peel.
Let the candied peel cool.
Use a cocktail pick to thread through the rind in a weaving pattern to form a whimsical ribbon shape.
Store in the fridge until needed.
Step 3: Shake the Blue Moon Cocktail
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
Add:
- 1 shot Blue Curaçao
- 2 shots vodka
- Prepared cardamom coconut syrup
- Remaining coconut milk
Shake vigorously for 20 to 30 seconds.
Step 4: Serve
Strain into a chilled martini glass.
Rest the candied orange ribbon across the rim of the glass.
Serve immediately while it’s cold and frothy.

Full Moon – Supermoon
So, what’s the fascination with a full moon?
Whether you believe in astrology or not, if you work in healthcare or emergency services, you might notice that full moon nights tend to be busier.
Strangely, these nights see a spike in activities. More women going into labor (linked to barometric pressure), increased incidents of crime and accidents, and even crustaceans engage in their reproductive cycles during a full moon. But why is that?
Astrology and a Full Moon
Scientifically, the moon is known to have a considerable impact on tides due to its gravitational pull. Full moons create heightened tidal activity.
With human bodies comprised of around 60% water, it stands to reason that the full moon might stir things up within us as well. This realization led me to conclude that a Blue Curacao Cocktail was the perfect drink to shake, pour, and celebrate!
A Note About Curacao Liqueur
Traditionally, Curacao liqueur (whether blue or orange) is favored in cocktails for its bold bitter orange flavor, derived from the Seville orange.
These oranges possess a remarkably potent aroma, making them an exceptional flavor source for liqueurs.
The essential oils from their peels enhance the flavor extraction process, and when softened by coconut milk, they create an extraordinary cocktail.

-
2 Cocktail sticks
- 1 shot Blue Curacao 3 tbsp
- 2 shots Vodka 6 tbsp
- 1/2 cup Coconut milk plus 2 tbsp for simple syrup
- 2 tbsp Sugar
- 3 Cardamom seeds
- Orange rind for garnish
- 1/2 cup Ice

Simple Syrup, in a small hot pan, lightly toast the seeds, crushing them as they warm. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sugar across the seeds, stir, and watch closely so as not to burn. Pour 2 tablespoons of coconut milk into the pan and remove quickly from heat. Stir, strain and chill.
-
Orange Rind Garnish, peel long strips of an orange rind: 4 inches long x 1/4 inch wide. In a medium warm pan, add remaining sugar to melt, be careful not to burn. Add the strips and shake the pan giving the rind a chance to release a tiny bit of its oil, causing the sugar to stick to it. Cool, then weave a cocktail garnish stick, small kabob stick or appetizer stick in and out of the rind, giving it a snake-like look. Set aside. These can be made in advance and kept in the fridge.
