How to Create Delicious Mushroom Mac and Cheese – Complete Step-by-Step Guide

You can find detailed, easy-to-understand directions and measurements in the recipe card located at the bottom of this article.

Step One

To prepare a simple mushroom Mac and cheese, start by cooking the pasta according to the instructions on the package until it’s al dente. Once done, drain it, rinse with cold water, and set aside for later use.

Step Two

In a large saucepan, melt 15g of butter over medium heat. I prefer to use the same pot I used for the pasta.

Step Three

Add the mushrooms and sauté them for about 5 minutes until they’re cooked through. It may seem like a lot at first, but they will reduce in size quickly.

Step Four

Mix in the garlic.

Step Five

Take the mixture out of the pan and set it aside. Don’t stress if there’s some mushroom juice and butter left in the pan; it will add flavor!

Step Six

Lower the heat on the stove.

Step Seven

In the same saucepan, melt the remaining butter.

Step Eight

Mix in the flour and cook for 2 minutes, whisking continuously.

Step Nine

Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Start with small amounts, then increase as the mixture becomes smooth.

Step Ten

Once all the milk is incorporated, raise the heat and bring to a simmer.

Step Eleven

Let it simmer for three minutes, adjusting the heat if needed, while whisking continuously. Be mindful of whisking around the edges of the pan, where the mixture may stick.

Step Twelve

Remove the saucepan from the heat.

Step Thirteen

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees C (fan mode).

Step Fourteen

Add salt, pepper, and mustard to the mixture and stir well.

Step Fifteen

Incorporate the mushrooms, mixing thoroughly. It’s fine if a little juice from the bowl makes its way in, just don’t add too much.

Step Sixteen

Mix in the cheese, saving a handful for topping later. I like to use a blend of cheeses, but it’s entirely your choice.

Step Seventeen

Fold in the pasta, ensuring it’s completely coated with the sauce, spreading it evenly. Since the sauce is quite thick, you’ll need to really mix it in.

Step Eighteen

Transfer the mixture into an ovenproof dish.

Step Nineteen

Sprinkle the remaining cheese evenly over the top.

Step Twenty

Bake for 20 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbling and the top turns golden brown.

Step Twenty-One

Let it rest for a few minutes before serving it up carefully.
