El Completo Italiano
As I’ve clearly indicated, I’m definitely not a hot dog enthusiast in the ongoing hamburger versus hot dog debate. So, when I do indulge in a hot dog, I prefer it loaded with toppings. This is why the El Completo hot dog from Chile is ideal for me! It features one of my absolute favorite foods: avocado, along with another must-have topping for traditional hot dogs: sauerkraut. The El Completo isn’t just a delight for the taste buds; it’s visually stunning with its vibrant colors, and each bite is packed with a fantastic blend of flavors. This hot dog will change your perspective on how to dress your hot dogs this summer; there’s a world of possibilities beyond just ketchup and mustard!
1. El Completo
The term translates to “complete” or “total,” highlighting the abundance of additional toppings that accompany the hot dog.
2. Customize!
As always, the amount and combination of toppings can be tailored to suit your personal preference. Feel free to add more or less of whatever you fancy! There are numerous variations of El Completo across Chile, so what you see here is simply my preferred version.
3. Toppings Galore
At first glance, the assortment of toppings on the El Completo might seem unusual, but the flavors harmonize beautifully on your palate. You’ve got creamy avocado, zesty fermented sauerkraut, a savory hot dog, fresh, juicy tomatoes, decadent kewpie mayo, and a touch of hot sauce for that spicy kick!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Instructions
-
In a small bowl, combine onions with a generous pinch of salt. Mix well and set aside for about 5-10 minutes.
-
In a medium bowl, scoop out the flesh of the avocado and place it in the bowl. Season with salt, pepper, lime juice, and hot sauce, then mash it all together with a fork until it’s smooth. Cover and refrigerate.
-
Preheat a grill, grill pan, or stainless steel skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil, and when it starts to shimmer, place the hot dogs in. Sear them for about 5 minutes, turning to ensure all sides achieve a nice char. Remove to a plate until you’re ready to build.
-
While the hot dogs are cooking, steam the buns. Lightly wrap them in damp paper towels and put them on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave for 30 seconds, or until they become warm and pliable.
-
To serve, place a hot dog in each bun. Top one side with the seasoned onions and the other side with tomatoes. In the center, evenly distribute the sauerkraut and generously apply the avocado mash. Add a drizzle of mayonnaise and chili sauce if you like. Serve right away.
