Italian Affogato Recipe
I pondered quite a bit on which drink recipe to share as we close out the year on the blog. The two that immediately came to mind were Affogato and Espresso martini (stay tuned for that recipe). I ultimately chose this traditional Italian coffee beverage because it is
- It is ideal for any season.
- Plus, you probably have the 2 ingredients already in your kitchen.
Oh coffee
I firmly believe life’s too short for dull coffee, which is why I make it my mission to enjoy the best coffee creations in the mornings.
Over the years, I like to think I’ve refined my coffee palate, yet I still prefer to keep my coffee recipes straightforward, especially the ones I share here. No one needs to break the bank over a cup of coffee; life should be simpler!
Allow me to boast a little—I make the best iced coffee and mocha. There, I’ve said it!
Now, back to today’s recipe. While it may not be a traditional recipe, you might be curious about the origin of affogato and its meaning.
What is affogato
Affogato is an Italian term that translates to “drowning,” and in this context, affogato coffee or affogato al caffee refers to coffee that is drowned by ice cream.
Who would have thought that pouring espresso over ice cream could be such a treat? But don’t dismiss it until you give it a try. It’s truly amazing, especially for coffee lovers.
What you need to prepare it
To whip up your own affogato ice cream, or affogato coffee as some may call it, you’ll need these 2 ingredients.
Vanilla Ice cream: Whatever you do, choose a high-quality ice cream. Keep in mind that price doesn’t always equate to quality. Opt for ice cream that’s creamy and has a good vanilla flavor, ideally made from real vanilla beans. Vanilla gelato is also an excellent choice—it’s the go-to ice cream among Italians.
Brewed Espresso coffee: You don’t need an expensive coffee machine to make a great cup. A French press works wonders, and you can even use your favorite instant espresso powder for this recipe.
Topping ideas
Chocolate shavings
Chopped nuts of any kind
Whipped cream (not traditional, but use it if you want to indulge)
Coffee liqueur
How to prepare affogato coffee
Add 1 to 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream into a chilled glass.

How to enjoy it
You might wonder how you eat this delightful mix of ice cream and coffee. Since it’s categorized as a warm dessert, enjoy affogato with a spoon, just like you would with apple crumble, banana mug cake or chocolate mousse (recipe coming soon).
